Sedgwick Coates born Middlefield Mass. 10/19/1803-Martinsburgh 10/5/1858, married 4/8/1829 to Olive Allen

Allen Ethan Coates 1/29/1830- died in Toledo Iowa 12/17/1915 married 3/9/1853 to Mary Ann Curtis born in Martinsburg 12/5/1835- 11/3/1926 in Cedar Rapids Iowa. 

Clarence D. Coates 6/6/1864 matins burgh NY- 7/7/1906 Died in Dubuque Iowa, married 2/27/1881 Ann Mc Cune.  Worked as a Book Keeper. They had the following children:

Glen H. Coates 5/9/1884 in Toledo- 6/17/1965 Kenmore NY, Married in Cleveland 7/8/1908 Mabelle Klossen.  
Glen worked as a building manager.  He and Mabelle had the following children born in Cleveland Ohio; (John (Jack) Coates born March 1910, Isabelle Coates born 1913.)  In 1920 Glen worked as a purchasing agent for a wire screw manufacturer. ( Jack Coates born March 1910 married 1936 to Marjorie?, by 1930 he had completed 1 year of college and was working 45 hours a week as a “credit man”.  Jack and Marjorie had the following children; Barbara Coates born in Indiana 1937, glen Coates born Ohio 1938)

Lester C. Coates 1883 worked as an accountant in an auto factory married 1920 to Jessie M.? born 1892.  They had one son (Robert E. Coates born 1916 in Lynshurst Ohio. Robert married 11/27/1939 Arline M. Leonhardt born 1918,daughter of John Leonhard and Jessie M. Effny.)


Hurburt E. Coates born in Whiteside Co. 2/13/1861-12/10/1882 in Toledo ohio,

Louis Allen Coates 7/26/1865 in Sterling Ill.- 4/9/1947 San Diego Ca., Married at Victor to Isabelle Dyer Husten 12/25/1875.  Isabelle was born in Victor 2/22/1875- died in San Diago Ca. 1/7/1943, daughter of Dr. Isaac Huston and Isabella Dyer. Louis was an Iron and steel worker who settled on a government homestead in South Dakota in 1908.  He went to work for the bureau of Indian affairs at Fort Belknap. He was adopted by the Grosventre tribe in recognition of his long service to help the Indians. After retirement he settled in Spokane Washington and later San Diago Cal.  Louis and Isabelle had the following children all born in Victor Iowa;

Belle Coates 11/11/1896- a writer of children’s books and a school teacher.

Hazel Coates 12/4/1897 married 1/7/1921 to Robert Fergusen- divorced.  Hazel and Robert had the following children; Beverly Belle Fergusen 10/3/1921, Roberta Joy Fergusen 3/9/1926-6/1/1926

Gretchen Coates 9/29/1903-1/14/1932 Married 5/24/1926 to Edward Donohue they had the following children; Louis Allen Donohue 1/27/1927, George Brown Donehue 7/15/1928- 1/10/1947 in Okinawa Japan

Claud C. Coates 1/8/1875-10/21/1875,

Floyd Cortis Coates 1/2/1877-married Eleanor Porter who died 10/21/1961 no children. He served in the Spanish American war in Cuba.,)

 

Chauncey P. Coates 12/18/1832-8/11/1865 died in Richmond Ill.  Married 812/16/1856 at Genoa Wisconsin to Jennie L. Brown born in Ticonderoga NY 4/13/1838-died near Portland Oregon 2/16/1916. 

Willis Chauncey Coates 11/12/1857-9/8/1927 in Topeka Kansas, Married 5/10/1881 to Gertrude Hovendam born in Ticonderoga NY 3/25/1858.  They had the following children:

Georgia Pearl Coates 7/10/1882 married 9/16/1911 to Frank Walters who died 4/23/1925  Georgia and Frank had the following children; Lois Walters 12/18/1912, Willis Walters 12/6/1913-11/6/1927, Lawrence Walters 3/11/1916, Frank Walters Jr. 7/14/1918, James Coates Walters 5/26/1921.

Charles Sedgwick Coates 7/17/1888 married 1921, in 1928 lived in Clifton Col.

James Alanson Coates 3/5/1891 Married 1914 to Marion Geiser.  They had the following children; Willis Coates 10/11/1916 in Topeka Kanssa, Mary Lou Coates 12/15/1920, James Burbon Coates 1931.  In 1920 James Coates Sr. worked as a proof reader for a lithograph, in 1930 as a printer for the news paper.

Eli Burnham Coates 3/18/1836- Toledo Iowa 5/30/1910, married 4/15/1862 Mary A. Bagle who died 1907.  They had the following children; (Baby Coates , Della C. Coates 12/18/1863 in Toleda- died 1/11/1889 married George L. Russell born 1859-1915)in 1880 Eli’s niece Mary T. Boyle was living with the family.


Seth Willard Coates 8/30/1837- 1/31/1915 in Cincinnati Ohio Married in Sterling Ill. 8/25/1867 to Harriet Mariah Curtis born in West martinsburgh NY 5/13/1848-8/25/1883 in Cameron Nebraska, Seth and Harriet had one daughter Jennie Coates born 1869.  In 1870 Harriet’s brother Edmund L. Curtis was living with the family.

 Bennett Earl Coates born in Teledo Ohio 5/29/1873-5/11/1930 died in Flint Michigan Married in Cincinatti Ohio 1/27/1897 to his first cousin Marie Wilhelmina Handy who died in Flint 7/28/1943. In 1920 Bennett was working as a hammer man for the auto factory  They had the following children;

Fred  B.Coates born in Carthage Ohio 10/2/1897-7/17/1964 Served in WWI. 1930 worked as a machine operator for the auto factory


Roy  A. Coates born Racine Wisconsin 8/29/1899-8/21/1932. 1930 worked as a cement finisher for the cement Co.


Frank H. Coates born in Flint 4/9/1901. 1930 worked as an inspector for the auto factory

Grace  I. Coates born in Turner Mich. 7/23/1908 married 8/29/1927 Earl McFall They had one child; Myra May McFall 2/20/1945.

Ula M. Coates 9/3/1909-2/1965 Married 10/18/1947 Robert Lawry. In 1930 worked as a machine operator in the auto factory


Maude  L.Coates 9/25/1911 Married 7/7/1934 Paul Whiting they had two children Ruthann Whiting and Richard Lee Whiting

In the 1930 census all of the children except Grace, who has already married, are living at home with Bennett Earl and Maude Coates. Bennett appears in the census as the head of household all living in Flint Michigan.  No further information at this time.

 Chauncey Sterling Coates 3/23/1879-11/2/1967 died in Baldwinville NY.married in Cincinnati 12/26/1904 to Elizabeth Ida Scherr born 2/15/1885-6/19/1962, daughter of Fred Scherr and Annie Beidenholtz. Chauncey lived in Cincinnati with his wife and family until 1918 when he moved to Cornersville Indiana and then to Baldwinsville NY in 1920.  He was a spring maker, working in the Hess factory owned by his uncle Alfred Hess.  Chauncey and  Elizabeth had the following children;

Harold Coates born in Cincinatti 11/5/1905- married 1927 to Blanch Slater born in Iowa 11/13/1909, daughter of Ira Slater and Sophia Carlyle.  Harold and Blanch had the following children, all born in Marcellus NY; Helen Jeanette Coates 1/20/1828- married 1950 Michael J. Rendall, Myrtle Blanche Coates 4/9/1929 Married 1947 to William F. Rivette, Mary Lucille Coates 3/4/1921 married Peter Wajcik, Harold Coates Jr. 2/23/1930-7/3/1934, Barbara Jean Coates 7/27/1935 Married 1953 John L. Sullivan, Donald Raymond Coates 9/8/1936 married Dorothy Conners- Divorced married Kathryn Yeager, Glady Irma Coates 7/2/1942 Married 1963 to Edward J. Lichorobiec.

Fredrick Chauncey Coates 8/21/1908Married in Oswego NY 11/3/1934 to Aneita Drake born 9/1/1908, daughter of Charles Drake and Pearl Fourniar.  They had the following children all born in Baldwinsville NY; Sally Eileen Coates 11/16/1935 Married 6/30/1956 to Harold Kirchner they had two children ( Kimberly Ann Kirchner 10/15/1957in fort Wayne Ind., Robin Suzanne Kirchner 11/11/1958, Sondra Jean Kirchner 9/9/1960, Heidi Coates Kirchner 4/9/1964), Suzanne Elizabeth Coates 2/17/1938 married 9/6/1958 James Jeffery they had the following children; (Brenda Ann Jeffery 10/28/1959, Stephen Fredrick Jeffery 1/19/1961), Helen Mae Coates 8/27/1910 Married 2/27/1928 Ralph M. Carrington they had the following children, all born in Baldwinsville NY; (Virginia Mae Carrington 1/28/1929, Charles Richard Carrington 10/8/1930-6/28/1931, Patricia Carrington 2/9/1932, Nancy Ann Carrington 8/31/1934, Helen Carrington 7/19/1936, Donald Martin Carrington 10/28/1938, Carol Carrington 1/26/1940, Allen Ralph Carrington 9/22/1942, Robert Arthur Carrington 1/30/1944, Linda Carrington 1/17/1947, David Bruce Carrington 7/15/1950, Michael Douglas Carrington 8/1/1952), Evelyn Jeanette Coates 10/8/1912 married 10/3/1935 to Francis W. Aherin.  They had the following children all born in Syracuse NY; ( Martha Joan Aherin 8/4/1941 married 3/6/1965 John Drew Horn they had a daughter born in Albany NY (Samantha Drew Horn 1/21/1969), William Douglass Aherin 6/17/1945- moved to Northhampton Mass 1969 married 7/22/1967 to Mary Gougeon), Robert George Coates 7/12/1918 married 1/23/1943 Alice Montague born in Syracuse NY 8/2/1919, daughter of Percy Montague and Doris Harrington. Robert served in WWII in the Navy  He and Alice had he following children all born in Syracuse NY:(Barbara Coates 12/22/1947, John Coates 2/6/1949, Stephen Coates 1953-2/1955) Donald Warren Coates 3/1/1921 Married in Ocean Side Ca. 5/28/1945 Jean Peck born in Gloversville NY 12/8/1919, daughter of Clarence Peck and Alice Currie.  Donald graduated from Colgate University and went on to receive his MS degree at Syracuse University in NY.  He was a 2nd Lt. during WWI in the marine Corp, serving in the pacific theater.  He served in the Korean war as a liaison officer with the 10th tank battalion and was decorated by the Korean Gov.  Donald and Jean had the following children all born in Syracuse NY; ( Richard Coates 10/16/1948, Thomas Coates 8/29/1954), Sterling Howard Coates 6/23/1923 married 6/6/1944 Mary Ann Brock born in Canastota NY 4/7/1923, daughter of James Brock and Freda Gerber.  He served in WWII from 11/1942-10/1945 in the Coast guard.  Sterling and Mary Ann had the following children all born in Syracuse; ( James Sterling Coates 10/2/1946 married 5/18/1968 to Mary F. Corbet one child (Christian Sterling Coates 6/8/1969), Daniel Brock Coates 7/19/1950, Peggy Ann Coates 5/2/1952, Christine Louise Coates 11/10/1955), John Richard Coates 6/26/1925 married 7/9/1949 Dolores Fonda born 8/7/1930 daughter of Lewis Fond and Martha Tallman.  N WWII he served with the 361st Army Engineers from 1943-1946 participated in the battle of the bulge.  He and Delores adopted a son(Shawn Coates 3/7/1966)

William Remington Coates 8/14/1839-8/6/1906 in Lowville NY- married 2/28/1860 Maria Babcock born 6/29/1840-4/12/1907.  William served in the 5th NY during the Civil war.  He and Maria had the following children, all born in Lowville NY,

Henry B. Coates 7/24/1844-6/18/1909- Married 1/1/1866 Helen Arthur born 1/10/1845-1933  daughter of Orlando Arthur and Eliza Master. 

Orlando Coates 2/10/1873-1950 married Cora Pitcher- Divorced and married Kathryn Koste.  Orlando and Cora had Nellie Pitcher Coates 12/21/1898,   ,  Orlando was  dairy farmer in Martinsburg Lewis New York.  He divorced his first wife Cora after 1910.  He married Cathyrn Elizabeth  Koster born 1895-1971, on 1/1/1917 in Greenville Methodist church, Prescott Ontario Canada.  On his marriage licenses he claimed to be a Widower. He was 44 when he married Cathryn who was 21 years old.  Cathryn was the daughter of Fred Koster and Hannah Homer of Martinsburg.  Orlando is buried in the Matinsburg cemetery along side Wife Cathryn who died in 1971.  Cora Pritcher Coates is also buried in this cemetery, having died 7/19/1957.  Orlando’s mother Hellen living with Orlando until her death in 1933.
