To reduce any further confusion I will focus on each of the families separately going forward. We will look now at the Robert Coates Family and bring them as close to present day as possible. Once we have completed our look at Robert's family we will return to Thomas and Charles to complete our little history of the Coates.
Robert Coats Jr. moved his family to Stonington Conn. His son William Coates had the following children all in Stonington New London Conn.:
William Coates Jr. born 11/31/1724 died in Stonington Conn in 1784. He died penniless. On 9/28/1742 william married Anstrase Gray, daughter of Edward Gray and Elizabeth Peabody. Elizabeth Peabody was said to be descended from John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of the Mayflower. William is thought to have pledged 4,000 pounds sterling silver to the continental Congress to purchase supplies for the army during a critical period in the revolution.

She married a second time on 2/1/1820 to Jonathan Delano who died 4/16/1835. Thomas Coates served in the revolutionary war in Roxbury Mass and also in Rhode Island.. His children were born in Stonington Conn. In 6/1788 he moved his family to Stephentown NY and later to Vermont. John Coates born at Stonington New London Conn. 7/8/1725- died there 5/22/1811 at age 85. John Married Anna Gray 12/4/1749. Anna was born in Little Compton Rhode Island on 3/14/1731- died in Stonington Conn. 1/10/1806 at age 74, she was the daughter of Edward Gray and Elizabeth Peabody, sister of William Coates Wife Anstras Gray. Edward Coates born 1/15/1753- died 1/28/1840, Married Eunice Brown. Eunice was born 1757 and died 4/27/1817. She was the daughter of Capt. Daniel Brown and his second wife Abigail Crory. Edward served in the revolutionary war in Roxbury and for 3 month outside of NY city in the fall of 1776. Robert Coates Jr.'s son Joseph Coates had the following children, all born in Essex county Mass.
Philip Coates born 1729 Married in Boston on 12/12/1750 to Ruth Pratt. Philip served in the French and Indian wars in expeditions to Canada and the Maine frontier. Philip and Ruth had the following children; Stephen Coates born in Malden 2/22/1753 married in Lynn Mass 12/3/1777 to Sarah Stone. During the revolution Stephen served at Cambridge, Winter Hill and with General Washington in the Jerseys. He was taken to Philadelphia Pa. ill in November of 1776. There he was quartered with Henry Hallowell and Charles Florence. The three men left the city together in the winter of 1776/1777 and tried to reach Lynn Mass. Mr.’s Florence and Hallowell fell ill along the way. Stephen Coates went on alone, ill and on foot. He eventually made it back to Lynn Mass. Stephen and Ruth Coates had the following children;

William Coates born Lynn 4/8/1756. He served as a minute man during the revolution and also in the NY campaign and the retreat across the Jerseys.,
Phillip Coates born Lynn 9/16/1758- Died Chelsea Mass. 10/1810, Phillip died penniless. He was married in Boston 9/9/1784 to Ruth potter born in Lynn 7/19/1765 died in Boston 2/27/1803, daughter of Benjamin Potter and Hannah Brown. Philip married a second time at Chelsea on 4/9/1809 to Mary Wait born 10/15/1769 died 10/22/1844, daughter of Joseph Wait and Mary? Philip fought in the revolutionary war. Sarah Coates to born Lynn 5/20/1761- Died 4/1832- married in Chelsea Mass on 12/30/1793 to Benjamin Sargent they had the following children;(Lois Sargent 3/15/1795, Baby Boy Sargent 2/6/1802-died 2/6/1802)
Moses Coates born in Lynn Mass 1739- died in Roseboom NY around 6/24/1812. Married in Salisbury Conn. On 2/16/1768 to Mehitable Butler. In 1760 Moses enlisted at Wallingford conn and served in the French Indian wars with the 2nd rgt. raised by the Colony of Conn. Moses also fought in the revolutionary war alongside his brother in law. After his marriage Moses and Mehitable settled in Salisbury Conn until 1795, when they moved to Roseboom NY. On 6/12/1807 he assigned property to his son Salmon Coates for the care of his Daughter Lois Coates and son Moses Coates Jr. This may indicate these two were not able to care for themselves and required a guardian. Moses and Mehitable had the following children all born in Salisbury;

John Coates born in Lynn Mas 1747 died in Middle field Mass. 1/19/1824. John Died penniless. He married in Wallingford Conn. On 12/7/1768 to Mehitable Way. Mehitable was born in Wallingford on 8/27/1744- died in Middlefield 7/18/1828. She was the daughter of John Way and Hannah Royce. John Coates served in the revolutionary war on the Mass. Line and marched into Canada in 1776. In May 1782 he was sent to West Point with the 1st Mass. Regiment. John Coates moved to Wallingford with his parents in 1752, to Lenox Mass in 1772 and finally settled in Middlefield Mass in 1785. John and Mehitable had the following children;

Theodore Coates born Wallingford 10/14/1771- died Middlefiled 2/27/1836, married 1/28/1827 to Kesia Crowell who died 4/21/1827. Marreid a second time 1/15/1830 to Phebe Bassett of Stockbridge who died 3/2/1833. Theodore was a sawyer, owning a saw mill on Cole’s bank before 1800. He is said to have been a very large, portly man weighing about 250 pounds. He was called Thody by his friends and acquaintances. James settled in Martinsburgh NY in 1804, settling on West Road beside a roaring brook. The house he built was still standing in 1927. In the war of 1812 James served in Martinsburgh and was discharged at Sackets Harbor in 1814. Zebulon Coates born in Stonington 7/20/1763- died Olcott NY 10/2/1849, married Mary ? who died 11/27/1840. Served on board ship during the revolutionary war, received a pension granted 4/5/1837 and sent to son Joseph Coates in Lockport NY. Following the war Zebulon lived at Ballston Otsego NY, Pompey and Wilson NY and finally settled in Olcott NY. Zebulon and Mary had the following children; (Fredrick Coates 1786-11/8/1835, Joseph Coates 1788, Asa Coates 1/23/1800-7/19/1880)
Christopher Coates Jr. 12/5/1765- died Otselic NY 12/9/1838. Christopher fought in the revolutionary war until 1/1784 when he was discharged. He married but wife’s name is as yet unknown. He moved to Otselic NY and had several children, again the names are unknown at this time save for 1 son, Benjamin, who signed a deposition in Lockport NY requesting Christopher’s pension, indicating he was the last surviving child on 6/15/1839. Benjamin Coates was born 1788- died in Pompey NY 4/4/1876
Amos Coates born in Stonington Conn. 4/7/1724- died before 1768- married in Stonington 1/2/1752 to Beulah Bill. Beulah was born in Lebanon Conn. 4/30/1730 to Ebenezer Bill and Patience Ingraham. Following Amos death she married a second time on 2/4/1768 to Abner Hill.Amos Coates fought in the French Indian war of 1757. He and Beulah had one child; Abigail Coates born Lebenon 3/18/1753.

William Coates Jr. born 11/31/1724 died in Stonington Conn in 1784. He died penniless. On 9/28/1742 william married Anstrase Gray, daughter of Edward Gray and Elizabeth Peabody. Elizabeth Peabody was said to be descended from John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of the Mayflower. William is thought to have pledged 4,000 pounds sterling silver to the continental Congress to purchase supplies for the army during a critical period in the revolution.

His children were born in Stonington Conn. In 6/1788 he moved his family to Stephentown NY and later to Vermont. Philip Coates born 1729 Married in Boston on 12/12/1750 to Ruth Pratt. Philip served in the French and Indian wars in expeditions to Canada and the Maine frontier. Philip and Ruth had the following children; Stephen Coates born in Malden 2/22/1753 married in Lynn Mass 12/3/1777 to Sarah Stone. During the revolution Stephen served at Cambridge, Winter Hill and with General Washington in the Jerseys. He was taken to Philadelphia Pa. ill in November of 1776. There he was quartered with Henry Hallowell and Charles Florence. The three men left the city together in the winter of 1776/1777 and tried to reach Lynn Mass. Mr.’s Florence and Hallowell fell ill along the way. Stephen Coates went on alone, ill and on foot. He eventually made it back to Lynn Mass. Stephen and Ruth Coates had the following children;

Philip married a second time at Chelsea on 4/9/1809 to Mary Wait born 10/15/1769 died 10/22/1844, daughter of Joseph Wait and Mary? Philip fought in the revolutionary war. Sarah Coates to born Lynn 5/20/1761- Died 4/1832- married in Chelsea Mass on 12/30/1793 to Benjamin Sargent they had the following children;(Lois Sargent 3/15/1795, Baby Boy Sargent 2/6/1802-died 2/6/1802)
Moses Coates born in Lynn Mass 1739- died in Roseboom NY around 6/24/1812. Married in Salisbury Conn. On 2/16/1768 to Mehitable Butler. In 1760 Moses enlisted at Wallingford conn and served in the French Indian wars with the 2nd rgt. raised by the Colony of Conn. Moses also fought in the revolutionary war alongside his brother in law. After his marriage Moses and Mehitable settled in Salisbury Conn until 1795, when they moved to Roseboom NY. On 6/12/1807 he assigned property to his son Salmon Coates for the care of his Daughter Lois Coates and son Moses Coates Jr. This may indicate these two were not able to care for themselves and required a guardian. Moses and Mehitable had the following children all born in Salisbury;

John Coates born in Lynn Mas 1747 died in Middle field Mass. 1/19/1824. John Died penniless. He married in Wallingford Conn. On 12/7/1768 to Mehitable Way. Mehitable was born in Wallingford on 8/27/1744- died in Middlefield 7/18/1828. She was the daughter of John Way and Hannah Royce. John Coates served in the revolutionary war on the Mass. Line and marched into Canada in 1776. In May 1782 he was sent to West Point with the 1st Mass. Regiment. John Coates moved to Wallingford with his parents in 1752, to Lenox Mass in 1772 and finally settled in Middlefield Mass in 1785. John and Mehitable had the following children;

Theodore Coates born Wallingford 10/14/1771- died Middlefiled 2/27/1836, married 1/28/1827 to Kesia Crowell who died 4/21/1827. Marreid a second time 1/15/1830 to Phebe Bassett of Stockbridge who died 3/2/1833. Theodore was a sawyer, owning a saw mill on Cole’s bank before 1800. He is said to have been a very large, portly man weighing about 250 pounds. He was called Thody by his friends and acquaintances. James settled in Martinsburgh NY in 1804, settling on West Road beside a roaring brook. The house he built was still standing in 1927. In the war of 1812 James served in Martinsburgh and was discharged at Sackets Harbor in 1814. Zebulon Coates born in Stonington 7/20/1763- died Olcott NY 10/2/1849, married Mary ? who died 11/27/1840. Served on board ship during the revolutionary war, received a pension granted 4/5/1837 and sent to son Joseph Coates in Lockport NY. Following the war Zebulon lived at Ballston Otsego NY, Pompey and Wilson NY and finally settled in Olcott NY. Zebulon and Mary had the following children; (Fredrick Coates 1786-11/8/1835, Joseph Coates 1788, Asa Coates 1/23/1800-7/19/1880)
Christopher Coates Jr. 12/5/1765- died Otselic NY 12/9/1838. Christopher fought in the revolutionary war until 1/1784 when he was discharged. He married but wife’s name is as yet unknown. He moved to Otselic NY and had several children, again the names are unknown at this time save for 1 son, Benjamin, who signed a deposition in Lockport NY requesting Christopher’s pension, indicating he was the last surviving child on 6/15/1839. Benjamin Coates was born 1788- died in Pompey NY 4/4/1876
Amos Coates born in Stonington Conn. 4/7/1724- died before 1768- married in Stonington 1/2/1752 to Beulah Bill. Beulah was born in Lebanon Conn. 4/30/1730 to Ebenezer Bill and Patience Ingraham. Following Amos death she married a second time on 2/4/1768 to Abner Hill.Amos Coates fought in the French Indian war of 1757. He and Beulah had one child; Abigail Coates born Lebenon 3/18/1753.
